Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament in the United Methodist Church.  It is a means of God extending his grace toward us.  Baptism is one of the specific commands of Christ to his followers.  It marks the entrance into the church and a participation in the life, death and resurrection of Christ.

Most often, we baptize infants (though there is no “proper” age).  In the case of infants, the church promises to help nurture the child until such time as they can understand and begin to be responsible the commitment for themselves, which we call confirmation.  There are three methods of baptism:  immersion, pouring, and sprinkling.  The choice is up to the person being baptized, or their family.  We recognize only one baptism by water; therefore, we receive the baptismal affirmation a person has made in another congregation.

Baptisms are conducted in a worship service.  We typically allow the person, or family, to choose the date of baptism in consultation with the pastor in order to allow their family to participate in the service.
